Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission for a carport?

No. However, please check that your preferred size falls under the Planning Portal Permitted Development rules. The maximum height to fall within these rules is four metres  or 2.5m eaves height if built within 2m of a property boundary.

Please note: This will be different for listed buildings and conservation areas, which will require full planning permission regardless of size.

We recommend you seek advice from your local council as this may differ in your area.

What is the life expectancy of a green roof?

40 to 50 years. You can double or even triple your standard roofs lifespan just from adding a green roof. And better yet, you're also helping the environment while doing it.

The sedums used offer UV protection and a shield which weather-protects your roof. Our EPDM water-proof membrane will keep your roof leak free during heavy rainfall.

How long do wooden car ports last?

The life expectancy for a well-maintained car port typically lasts between 20 to 50+ years, depending on the quality of timber, climate exposure, and routine maintenance.

By adding a green roof this offers protection to natural elements from above. We would also recommend adding metal feet to the bottom of the structure as this lifts the timber slightly off the ground stopping any moisture going into the timber.

Car port vs garage

With a car port you may not require planning permission, depending on the size and restrictions in your area. Whereas, with a garage you will require full planning permissions to be approved for the external building to go up. This is time consuming.

A garage will take longer to be put up due to the foundations, walls, insulation and the cost will be exceptionally higher than a car port.

A Car port is a stand alone structure with open sides, which shields your car from overhead sun, rain and debris. However, it does leave the sides exposed to wind-driven rainfall and wildlife. There is also less security on a car port in comparison to a garage.

Garages provide complete weatherproofing against all elements, preventing frost buildup as well as complete security with locked doors to protect your vehicle and personal belongings. This will take longer for a wet vehicle to dry.
