Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sempervivum?
Sempervivum means "always alive" in latin, which describes how well they survive in harsh conditions like extreme cold or drought.
They are a group of low-growing succulent plants commonly known as houseleeks or hens and chick. Their leaves are beautiful shades of bright green, grey, red, purple or yellow. In the summer months some varieties feature small, star-shaped flowers in pink, red, white or yellow.
Can a sempervivum survive UK winter?
Yes, sempervivums are tough-hardy plants that can tolerate freezing temperatures and sub-zero climates.
Ensure the plants have good drainage by planting in fast-draining soil to stop any water logging. If positioned outdoors, there is no need to water during winter months, nature provides enough moisture to keep sempervivums happy.
Are sempervivums indoors or outdoor plants?
Outdoors is recommended, but with strict care they are also good as indoor plants. Sempervivums require direct sunlight to keep their vibrant colours and compact rosette shapes flourishing.
They thrive best in rockeries, garden beds or containers - making them the perfect candidates for our green roofs. Sempervivums are exceptionally hardy plants, so they can easily survive frost and freezing temperatures.
Does a sempervivum flower?
Yes, sempervivums are outstanding plants that only flower once in their lifetime. They are monocarpic, meaning the individual rosette dies after it finishes blooming and produces seeds, known as chicks, that continue to grow and expand the plant cluster.
Sempervivums typically bloom when they reach full maturity, in the summer after 3 to 4 years of growth.
How much sun does a sempervivum need?
Sempervivums require 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day, making them great for green roofs and flowerbeds. They are drought-tolerant and rely on natural rainfall, making them generally low maintenance plants.
