Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main purpose of a pergola?

A pergola provides filtered or full shade while also defining your outdoor space. There's an architectural interest created within your garden, whether it's shading your outdoor dining space or a seating area to enjoy during the summer months.

Pergolas are beautiful structures that become your own. You can add personality and character with a green roof to have full shade or even the leave it bear with the wooden beams providing a filtered shade.

Check out our range to see which version you like best.

Do I need planning permission for my pergola?

No. However, please check that your preferred size falls under the Planning Portal Permitted Development rules. The maximum height to fall within these rules is three metres or 2.5m eaves height if built within two metres of a property boundary.

Please note: This will be different for listed buildings and conservation areas, which will require full planning permission regardless of size.

We recommend you seek advice from your local council as this may differ in your area.

How close to my property boundary can I put my pergola?

As close as you'd like it as long as it isn't overhanging the boundary line.

Please note: We will always recommend you check with your local authorities planning permissions as this may vary in your area.
